On August 12, 2019, David Gower OBE attended The Bluebird, Chelsea just two days before the Lords Ashes Test Match. The event would mark the final test-series he’d ever host on Sky Sports as we rewound the clock on his astonishing cricketing journey. As the guests were seated following a networking, canapes and drinks session, the left-handed maestro was moved backstage in preparation for a special reveal.
85 guests in theatre-style rose to their feet as we showed Gower’s effortless touch on our video footage, as he caressed yet another drive through cover. As the video finished the Q/A commenced alongside his best-friend, best man and lifelong cricketing pal Chris Cowdrey.
The interview had an incredibly special feel to it, as the two men spoke honestly and effortlessly like two old friends in the pub. The guests heard David Gower speak about his England captaincy days, his relationship with Graham Gooch, his laidback approach to captaincy, the tiger-moth ascendancy over an England game and his best moments as a broadcaster. It was touching to hear his responses to audience questions that underlined that even the relaxed Gower had his trials and tribulations with adversity, and that a relaxed attitude helped the great man handle his darkest days. Every member of our audience enjoyed a special photo and signing opportunity.
We would like to thank all our guests who attended and we look forward to seeing you again for a night of enthralling story-telling soon!
