On Tuesday, March 10, we welcomed England cricketing icon and wicket-keeping genius Alan Knott MBE.
As guests poured through the doors at Smith and Wollensky, all were greeted by luxurious canapes and a choice of beverage. To our guests great astonishment, two former England legends Graham Gooch and John Emburey joined the audience as we called just 70 members into our private space for our immersive Q/A session.
Former Kent Cricketer Fabian Cowdrey introduced former England Cricket Captain and Alan’s former team-mate, Chris Cowdrey. The interview touched on Alan’s eccentricities, the unusual ways in which he prepared for each game, his partnership with Derek ‘Deadly’ Underwood, his battles with Jeff Thomson and his experience of keeping on uncovered pitches. His wife Janet was honoured by CowCorner as they are on the cusp of 51 years together.
To the crowd’s amazement, Graham Gooch asked for the mic from Chris Cowdrey during audience questions, to pay tribute to his former England team-mate.
“Knotty was one of my heroes growing up. I idolised him. He was a genius, whilst his freakish ability and preparation was way before his time. There are not many cricketers I’d go out of my way to listen to, but Alan is most definitely one of them and at the top of the list.”
As the night drew to a close, every guest lined patiently to have their photo taken and their flyers signed, before heading upstairs for a discounted dinner in the stunning Smith and Wollensky.
We would like to thank everyone for coming and we truly hope the evening will live long in the memory.
